Why side glass breaks differently
Windshields are laminated: two layers of glass with a plastic layer between them, so they crack but hold together. Most door windows are tempered glass instead. Allstate's guidance notes that damage to tempered glass calls for replacement, since it can't be repaired. When tempered glass breaks, it breaks all at once into small pieces.
Covers on and glass handled with suction cups, start to finishWhat the visit includes
- Seat and door covers, then a careful vacuum of the seat, floor and door pocket.
- The inner door panel comes off, and every piece of glass gets cleared out of the bottom of the door, where it would otherwise rattle forever.
- New glass is set in the regulator clips, and we run the window up and down to check its track and seal.
- The panel goes back on, and we test the switch, the lock and the speaker before handing back the keys.
Until we get there
Tape clear plastic over the opening from the outside and park out of the rain if you can. If the break-in left a mess on the seats, don't sweep it with your hand; wait for the vacuum.
Comprehensive coverage
The North Carolina Department of Insurance explains that comprehensive coverage pays for damage not caused by a collision, including theft and vandalism. Check your own policy and deductible before filing.
